Tribal Journeys 2026: Canoe Life Family Paddles to Nisqually

In early August, the Canoe Life Family returned home after a week-long journey by water to Nisqually, Washington. We are incredibly proud of the youth, paddlers, Elders, families, and support staff whose hard work, dedication, and commitment made this journey possible.

The journey to Nisqually was about much more than paddling. Throughout the trip, our youth had the opportunity to strengthen their connection to themselves, their paddle family, the lands and waters they travelled, and their culture. Each day brought opportunities to learn, grow, support one another, and experience the teachings that come with travelling together as a canoe family.

Preparation for the journey began long before the canoe touched the water. In the months leading up to Tribal Journeys, youth participated in off-season training, including boxing, paddle making, and harvesting qwa’pulhp. They also spent time learning songs and teachings and working alongside Elders and community members to prepare their paddles and themselves for the journey ahead.

Paddling in the Moon Beam canoe provided an opportunity for youth to carry forward traditions passed down by their ancestors. The experience encouraged resilience, teamwork, responsibility, and connection while creating space for youth to build relationships with one another and the people supporting them along the way.

From the training and preparation at home to the miles travelled on the water, every part of the journey was an opportunity to learn and grow. The Canoe Life Family travelled through several communities and waters on their way to Nisqually, supported by family, friends, Elders, and staff who helped make the journey possible.

We are so proud of everyone who took part in this year’s journey and of the dedication shown by our youth throughout the experience. Their commitment to learning, supporting one another, and carrying our culture forward is something to celebrate.

Huy tseep q’a to everyone who supported the Canoe Life Family and helped make this journey possible.
