Le'lumilh Caregiving Program

When children cannot live at home, Kw’umut Lelum is responsible for providing safe and nurturing homes.

Those respected community members who care for our children are referred to as Le’lumilh. This word comes from our Elders, and from the shared belief that our smun’eem are a sacred gift to our communities and families. It is the tradition of lending support to our extended families by contributing to the guidance and care of our children when needed.

It is our priority to find homes first and foremost with family, then within the child’s own community, or with an Indigenous caregiver.

And in fact, more than half of our children and youth are living with immediate or extended family. Kw’umut Lelum provides financial supports to help cover costs for each child, as well as training, education, cultural and wellness supports and respite care where needed.
