Building Healthy Relationships: Breaking the Cycle

In the world of human connections, having good relationships is really important. But sometimes, it's tough to make positive connections because of problems like lateral violence and inter-generational trauma. Kw’umut Lelum recently held a workshop, led by Tammie Myles of Mother Earth Whispers, to help people learn to improve their relationships through self-awareness and better communication. Today we want to share some of the key teachings from this workshop.

Kw’umut Lelum recently held a workshop, led by Tammie Myles of Mother Earth Whispers, to help people learn to improve their relationships through self-awareness and better communication. Today we want to share some of the key teachings from this workshop.

Understanding Lateral Violence: Not Good for Health

Lateral violence is like the opposite of good communication and relationships. It happens when people carry around personal trauma that they haven't dealt with. For Indigenous communities, these problems often stem from things like residential schools and abuse, passing down through families and causing difficulties in how people talk and connect with each other.

Healing for Everyone: Making a Difference

To have good relationships, we need to deal with our own problems. If we don't, it can affect how we relate to others. These problems, connected to past traumas, can make it hard to have balanced relationships. When we work on healing ourselves, we're not just helping ourselves but also the people who came before us and those who will come after us. This healing has a big impact, creating a legacy of strength and resilience.

Living in the Now for a Better Tomorrow

Breaking free from the problems of the past takes bravery. Holding onto the past can make it tough to have good relationships. Instead, we should focus on the present, be positive, and look forward to the future. This way, we can be leaders and make positive changes in our families and communities.

Making a Better Future for Our Children

Unhealthy ways of talking and connecting with others get passed down to our kids. To stop this, we need to be good examples for our children. Teaching them about healthy relationships, and modelling good communication gives them the tools to build positive connections when they grow up.

Setting Boundaries: Important for Good Relationships

Knowing ourselves well and saying what we're okay with and what we're not is crucial for healthy relationships. Talking about these boundaries helps us navigate relationships with clear understanding and respect for both ourselves and others.

The Keys to Great Relationships: Goals, Acceptance, Responsibility, Inspiration

Good relationships are built on having goals, being okay with each other, taking responsibility, and inspiring one another. These things create a strong foundation for connections that last.

Give and Take: Balancing Relationships

Being in a relationship means both people give and take. Making sure we are balanced in our minds, hearts, bodies, and spirits is super important. This way, we bring our best selves to each connection.

Having healthy relationships means breaking free from problems like lateral violence and inter-generational trauma. It takes thinking about ourselves, being brave, and deciding to make positive changes. By understanding ourselves, setting boundaries, and focusing on the key elements of good relationships, we can create a future full of strong connections, understanding, and growth together. You deserve to have loving and respectful relationships that bring you joy and allow you to be seen and valued.
