A Journey of Possibility: Kw’umut Lelum’s Adventure to Boston

In September 2023, a group of young minds from our 9 Nations of Kw’umut Lelum embarked on a transformative and inspiring journey to Boston, Massachusetts. This remarkable expedition was a testament to the power of dreams and the dedication of those who believe in the potential of our youth.

With the help of Fulbright Canada – an organization that supports educational exchanges between Canada and the US – as well as support from Honouring Nations Canada and the Maple Leaf Foundation, Kw’umut Lelum youth would be headed off for a taste of some of America’s most prestigious educational institutions, and some cross-cultural sharing!

The youth were able to experience the Peabody Museum of Anthropology in Boston - one of the oldest anthropology museums in the world. It houses a massive collection of artifacts from around the globe, but also has many items that originated in Coast Salish territories. They toured Harvard University - the first college established in the American colonies and whose Charter of 1650, which continues to govern the institution, pledges the University to “the education of English and Indian youth.” They were also treated to a visit at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and cultural exchange at the Harvard Pow-Wow, in between experiencing the sights of this historic American city.

“Travel and exchanging ideas with other people beyond your own community is really enriching for our children.” says Tim Harris, Step Up Team Lead and trip chaperone. “It opens us up to start thinking about different possibilities for ourselves, and builds important life skills.”

This trip was not just about crossing geographical boundaries but about showing the endless possibilities the world has to offer. It was a journey to demonstrate that these opportunities are not distant dreams but are well within our youth’s grasp.

This journey was a testament to the power of collaboration, vision, and determination. It showcased the potential of our youth and the boundless opportunities that await them in this world. As we look forward to the future our youth are ready to embrace the limitless possibilities that lie ahead for each and every one of them. We raise our hands to our youth and every single person who made this journey possible.

Day 1

Our voyage began with a warm farewell from Snuneymuxw as we said 'Hullo' to Vancouver. We then hopped on the train to the River Rock, where we enjoyed a delightful dinner and prepared for our 3:00 AM start the next day.

Day 2

Bright and early, we caught a taxi to the airport to continue our journey to Boston. Upon arrival, we headed straight to the beautiful Cambria Hotel, where we shared a meal, laughter, and much-needed rest after a long day of travel.

Day 3

Our exploration of Boston began with a visit to the Harvard Peabody Museum, where we were treated to both breakfast and lunch. We then headed to MIT for a meet and greet with a staff member and an independent tour of the university. In the evening, we experienced the electric atmosphere of a Boston Red Sox game at the historic Fenway Park where we took in a game, the energy and sang “Sweet Caroline” with the rest of the stadium in a movie-like experience.

Day 4

We returned to the Harvard Peabody Museum for another captivating visit. Following this, we had a tour of Harvard University, where we delved into its rich history. Later in the day, a bus tour of Boston gave us a deeper understanding of the area's charm and significance.

Day 5

We embarked on a special journey to the Pequot First Nation. Here, we explored their impressive museum, heard stories of their rich history, engaged in traditional games, and shared our own cultural heritage. They also showcased their sophisticated syrup manufacturing system, leaving us in awe.

Day 6

Our day was filled with exploration as we visited the New England Aquarium, getting up close with marine life. In the evening, we embraced the vibrant culture of the surrounding areas at the Harvard Pow Wow. The event featured song, dance, and kiosks, which our youth enthusiastically engaged with, creating beautiful memories.

Day 7

With smiles on our faces, newfound friendships, open hearts and minds, and memories to last a lifetime, we made our journey back to our home lands. The Kw’umut Lelum Youth returned from Boston, not just as tourists but as bearers of endless possibilities, hope and ambassadors of the belief that dreams are achievable if they just reach out and grab them.
