Saysutshun Field Trip

Kw’umut Lelum 4 Seasons of Wellness sponsored a field trip to Saysutshun (Newcastle Island) on July 18th. Sixteen kids aged 7 – 12 years old participated in a fun day of cultural activities and recreation.

The group gathered at Maffeo Sutton Park and took the brief ferry ride over to Saysutshun which was a first for many of the participants. Upon arrival, the group was treated to a 1.5 hour interpretive walking tour hosted by Snuneymuxw band member, Dave Bodaly.

Dave shared stories relating to the various totem poles, sacred village sites, mining history, harvesting of natural resources, traditional medicines and place names related to Saysutshun and Snuneymuxw territory.

The kids, representing many KL member Nations, enjoyed themselves, making new friends, and devouring a catered lunch and ice cream. They also stayed active by participating in playing soccer, frisbee, skipping game challenges as well as beach-combing along the shoreline in such a spectacular setting.
