Kw’umut Lelum want to raise our hands to thank all who attended our Strong Roots, Strong Families 20th Anniversary Celebration. The event was a huge success thanks to the participation of our staff, volunteers, KL youth and families and community leaders! More than 200 people joined the celebration at the Halalt gym and athletic field on July 6th. We give thanks to Halalt First Nation for hosting us on their territory, as well as to the representatives from all of our nine member nations who have supported the work of KL for the last 20 years. We also want to thank the special guests who have given their voice to our cause including our founder Daisy Edwards (Snawnawus), George Harris (Stz'uminus), Roy Daniels (Malahat), Gordy Edwards (Snawnawus), Georgina Livingstone (standing in for late Chief Livingstone as requested by the Family), Kim Recalma-Clutesi (Qualicum), Robert Sam (Penelakut), Chief Rick Thomas (Lyackson), Douglas White II (Snuneymuxw), Raven August (standing in for the late Josephine August, Halalt), Earl Jack Sr. (Penelekut), Michael Harry (Malahat), Dr. Ralph Nilson (Vancouver Island University) and Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond (Representative of Children & Youth). KL is grateful to the Halalt Drum and Dance Group, led by Halalt Councillor Dan Norris, for their performance as part of the formal program and during the community fun fair. Our amazing caterer, Nan Seward and her helpers who prepared and served a seafood feast, and Nanaimo Aboriginal Centre and individuals who donated beautiful cakes for our cake walk. We want to say a special thank you to Jessica Jones, a former KL youth who graduated from VIU’s culinary arts program and who was responsible for the delicious anniversary cake. Our apologies that the crab did not arrive at the event, but we hope you enjoyed the pizza that replaced it. We are also thankful for our fun-fair vendors and entertainers who provided pony rides, a photo booth, bouncy castle, midway ride, face painting, ice cream, musical entertainment and first-aid services. You really did put the “fun” in fun fair! Our Event Coordinators Tracey White and Tricia Thomas helped to make this all possible with their expert planning and organization. We also want to convey our warmest “thank you” to our volunteers - you are true heroes! We raise our hands in appreciation for all your hard work and assistance to make the event a success.
Finally, to the families and community members who came out to show their support, we say Hy'chqa! We invite you to check out the event photos here.
