Taking responsibility back for children and families
Kw'umut Lelum Child and Family Services is in the process of taking back responsibility to care for the safety and well being of the children within the nine communities. The responsibility of being legally delegqated to Kw'umut Lelum from the Provincial Ministry of Children and Family Development(MCFD). By October 2007 we expected to have full responsibility for the services expected of children and family agencies.
In working with our children, youth and families, we honour these guiding principles:
children are entitled to be protected from abuse, neglect and harm or threat of harm;
a family is the preferre environment for the care and upbringing of children and the responsibility for the protection of children rests primarily with the parents;
if, with available support services, a family can provide a safe and nurturing envoronment for a child, support services should be provided;
the child's views must be taken into account when decisions relating to a child are made;
kinship ties and a child's attachment to the extended family must be preserved;
the cultural identity of aboriginal children must be preserved;
the decisions relating to children should be made and implemented in a timely manner.
