Foster Care

Kw'umut Lelum recruits, trains, supports and approves individuals or couples who are        interested in acting as direct caregivers for children in care. Kw'umut Lelum Resource workers provide support and training to all foster parents on an ongoing basis. Foster parents who are caring for children and youth recieve "maintenance" funding which covers costs related to housing, food, recreation, transport, school and other child related needs. The amount of funding varies according to the age of the child and skills required by the foster parents.

Kw'umut Lelum regularily honors the unique efforts and quality care provided by foster parents. A foster parents Appreciation Night and a "Meet &Greet " Day are hosted to celebrate the contribution foster parents make.

Kw'umut Lelum is always in need of foster parents who respect Coast Salish practices and traditions. At present, almost half of our children in care are in non-native foster homes. Our first choice is to provide homes close to the child's community for our children and youth in care. Individuals or couples who are interested in fostering are welcome to apply any time.

In preparing for full delegation of authority, Kw'umut Lelum needs to recruit at least two more additional foster homes on or near each of the nine nations.
